Mr. Asgard is a Partner with the international law firm of Mona Shah & Associates, and the founder and CEO of Visable, LLC , which offers online visa interview preparation featuring simulated interviews with former US Department of State Consular Officers. Previously, Mr. Asgard was a veteran U.S. Foreign Service Officer with the Department of State, with extensive field and headquarters experience in the diplomatic, political, consular, economic, strategic communication, commercial/trade advocacy, and research & analysis areas.
While with the Department of State, he held several key senior posts, including Political Advisor at U.S. Central Command, where he served as primary foreign policy advisor to CENTCOM Commanders General David Petraeus and General James Mattis; Director of the Iran Regional Presence Office (IRPO) in Dubai, the U.S. government’s primary field operation concerning Iran, and as Director of Voice of America Persian, VOA’s largest language service, where he increased viewership 380% during his tenure. He has also served as Deputy Political Counselor in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, with the National Security Council, as a Director with the Bureau of Conflict & Stability Operations, Economic/Commercial Officer in Afghanistan, and as a Consular Officer in the UAE and Turkey. Mr. Asgard has also served as an International Affairs Fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations, and as Desk Officer for Turkey, Iraq, and Iran.
During his tenure with the Bureau of Conflict & Stability Operations, Mr. Asgard pioneered the introduction of advanced analytics and data forecasting to the State Department. After government service, he served as CEO for AISTRA, an advanced analytics/data science information technology startup focused upon forecasting and negotiation support for the national security, public policy, and financial markets sectors.
Both prior to his government service and after, Mr. Asgard practiced immigration law. He is a member of Phi Beta Kappa, the Council on Foreign Relations, and the American Immigration Lawyers Association. He also serves on the boards of the World Affairs Council of Central Florida and the Art of Hope, a non-profit working to address the Syrian refugee crisis. Mr. Asgard is a recipient of the State Department’s Ambassador Charles E. Cobb Award for Initiative and Success in Trade Development and the Secretary of State’s Award for Public Outreach.
Mr. Asgard has served as a Senior Fellow at the Atlantic Council and as an adjunct staff member at RAND. He has published, presented and moderated widely, including at the UBS CEO Summit, the Atlantic Council, the Stimson Center, the Council on Foreign Relations, Brookings, the Gulf Research Center, University of Southern California, George Washington University, Georgetown University, University of Toronto, UCLA, and on media outlets including CNN, NBC, ABC, Al Jazeera, Al Hurra, Voice of America, and The National Interest.
Mr. Asgard holds a JD from Tulane University, a Master’s in International Relations from the University of Pennsylvania, and a BA summa cum laude from Temple University.
