Rev. Jesse L. Jackson Sr. and the Rainbow Push Wall Street Project – Episode 31

With the President’s Executive order released just a few days ago, banning refugees, it is very timely that Rev. Jesse L. Jackson Sr. joins the show to share his views about the matter and to invite everyone to his upcoming event.
Listen to “Rev. Jesse L. Jackson on Immigrant Civil Rights and the Rainbow Push” on Spreaker.

For nearly 50 years, he has played a pivotal role in every movement for peace, civil rights, empowerment, gender equality and social justice all over the world. He is the great unifier and the consciousness of a nation.

For this week’s show, Mona Shah and Mark Deal sit down with Rev. Jesse L. Jackson Sr. as they talk about the repercussions of the President’s recent ban on refugees, and more importantly, the upcoming Rainbow Push Coalition Wall Street project and its connection to EB-5.

Rainbow Push Coalition Wall Street Project:

  • This movement encourages development and local, national, and foreign investment. Inclusion is the key to growth, when there is growth everybody wins. As a civil rights matter, many African-Americans have been locked out of the economy, but in fact, they are the fast-emerging market. The 100 largest cities are composed of a majority of black and brown. They represent market, money, talent, location and growth. They are underserved and undercapitalized and very much ripe for global investors.
  • The aim of this project is to bring investors and copartners together. Ministers from around the nation including their congregations, consumers, investors from Wall Street to Silicon Valley, and business people from various fields are expected to join. International delegations are also expected to arrive from South Africa, Equatorial Guinea and Nigeria.

Rainbow Push Coalition Wall Street Project and its connection to EB-5:

  • Investments are not limited to New York City. Aside from big cities like Chicago and LA, medium-sized cities are actually the growth cities of today. There is a great need to globalize economic investment opportunities.
  • Some successful projects and investments that the Rainbow Coalition has spearheaded include The New York Stock Exchange’s recognition of Martin Luther King Jr. Day as a public holiday. They were also able to get investors involved in pension and hedge fund deals – the whole range of economic opportunities from Wall Street.
  • Preferred development projects that the Rainbow Coalition is willing to facilitate for the urban community include adequate and affordable housing and school reconstruction. In Chicago alone, there are 80,000 abandoned lots. In Detroit, there are 100,000 abandoned lots. In Chicago, there have been 50 public schools that were closed. There is also a great need for infrastructure, fast rail and trains to connect towns, cities and suburbs.
  • EB-5 projects don’t always have to be the big glamour hotel projects. Undervalued areas and underutilized resources will increase significantly with new houses and schools and investment into people’s lives, education and well-being.
  • Just last week, Sen. Feinstein and Sen. Grassley have introduced the bill to congress to end the EB-5 program completely. Although it is expected that majority will be opposing this bill, it is disappointing that some people cannot see the good that EB-5 can do. Aside from job creation, doing good to the country and humanity, and new capital coming in, EB-5 fosters economic prosperity without any tax payer’s expense. There is no limit as to what projects people can invest in.

The Immigrant Community Right Now:

  • There is an unfounded fear about immigrants. They have not been the source of violence, they have been the source of growth. The demonstrations from the last few weeks due to the bans that the President put into place against some nations is a show of appreciation of immigrants. The demonstrations are about immigrants and for immigrants, but are not done by them. The community is united in its stand that they don’t feel the same way even if the President has signed the Executive orders.

Wall Street Economic Summit:

  • The value of attending the event is to meet the people that you will form relationships and partnerships with. Amazing speakers include The Honorable Charles E. Schumer, US Senator from NY; The Honorable Charles B. Rangel, a longtime Representative from New York; The Honorable Scott M. Stringer; The Honorable Kurt Summers; Ed Gordon, an award-winning journalist; and Susan Taylor, state treasurer, to name a few. Part of the focus is on pensions and how to go to the next level, which is hedge funds.
  • Mona Shah will be in the Urban Policy Panel covering EB-5 topics.
