Updates from the UK

No More Extensions for Tier 1 (General) Migrants

Subsequent to changes in the Immigration Rules in 2014, Tier 1 visa holders will no longer be able to extend their leave after April 5, 2015, or apply for indefinite leave to remain (ILR) in the UK after April 5, 2018.  To remain in the UK in the Tier 1 category, for those who have a visa expiring on or before April 5, 2015, visa holders should ensure that they submit their extension application in a timely manner prior to this date.  Please note that the maintenance requirement in the Tier 1 category increased from £900 to £945, effective as of July 1, 2014.

Visa holders should also submit an application for ILR once they have resided in the UK for 5 years either solely in the Tier 1 category, or in combination with another category, and must do so before April 5, 2018.   ILR will no longer be an option in this category after April 5, 2018.

ETS TOEIC and TOEFL English Test

As of July 1, 2014, ETS BV was removed from the approved list of Secure English Language Test suppliers.  Transitional arrangements are in place to ensure genuine applicants who have not yet applied are not unduly affected by the change.  For those already in the UK and wishing to apply for further leave to remain, a certificate from an alternative provider should be submitted to avoid having the application delayed pending further inquiries.

Launch of 24-Hour Visa Service for Chinese Nationals

Home Secretary Theresa May announced beginning August, a priority 24-hour visa service will be accessible to Chinese nationals for all visitor applicants for a fee of £600 to help improve the visitor visa process. In addition, Home Secretary May confirmed that the UK and European partners are continuously talking to enable a single application procedure for both a UK and Schengen visa (allowing travel to other EU countries). As applicants complete their UK application, they can simultaneously automatically generate a partially completed Schengen form. This was only available to tour groups but, will include independent travelers this summer.

New British-Irish Visa Scheme for Indian and Chinese Nationals

Home Security May also announced that the Home Office and the Irish Department of Justice & Equality would be soon introducing the “British Irish Visa Scheme” between the UK and Ireland.  This will allow Chinese and Indian national business and tourist visitors to travel to and around the UK and Ireland on a single short-stay visa.  Expected start date in autumn 2014.  Note that this does not apply to individuals wishing to work in either the UK or Ireland.
